What do you think about this tragic story?

I read in the papers about this terrible tragedy involving a soldier recently back from Afghanistan.
Capt Jonathan Allen was struck as he swerved to avoid a pothole while riding home to Burbage on the A338 from his barracks near Tidworth. A lot of papers are reporting this as if it is the councils fault for not repairing this massive pothole. While I accept that the council should repair these as soon as possible, I believe that the soldier must have been at fault. Surely if you see a pothole, and being such a large one, it must have been clearly visible, you do not swerve out to the middle of the road without looking over your shoulder. If he had looked first , he would have seen the Truck. Alternatively, he had the option to ride onto the grass at the side of the road. My overall feeling about this story is, how sad that this heroic man survived the war zone of Afghanistan, only to die in this terrible way.
