precarious bird nest

I don't know the technical name for it, but there's a mesh, metal pipe coming out of the side of our house, that's something to do with the boiler, that gets quite hot. It is about 15-20cm diameter, but it looks like a bird is building a nest ontop of it. It is in a sheltered place, within a porch type area, so it keeps warm and dry.

But its looks very precarious, and we haven't seen the bird, so we don't know how big it, or its eggs and chicks will be. is there anything we can do?

bl**dy h*ll, i jsut heard rustling from that area and so i looked outside and there's a huge bird resting on it. Ibecause of the angle of the window and the pipe, its hard to tell but its something like a coo dove or small pidgeon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Question Author
sorry about my initial reaction, but i was expecting ome little sparrow or tit . . .
Question Author
could it be preparing to lay eggs, its a 6ft drop if they fall off the pipe!
I doubt whether it is trying to build a nest. The bird has discovered that the pipe is warm so has claimed it as its personal hottie roost.
Question Author
There's definately a nest there, we're jsut worried that it might try and lay eggs in it. how big and how eggs do pidgeons/ coo doves lay?
They lay two or three and they poo a lot,. I had them nesting outside my bedroom window a few years back, on a tiny shelf.
Question Author
How big, considering i'm not sure which bird it is, but its more likely to be a coo dove.
they lay two eggs-do nothing -they are best left alone
Ring doves are sort of dove grey (a bit beigy) with a collared neck and look a bit more delicate than pigeons - ornery pigeons are big and square and grey.
Question Author
It was a greta big huge pidgeon, but it could be a young female who doesn't realise that they shouldn't lay eggs there . . .
They'll lay anyway private and high. molly!
Question Author
my last post went completely wrong.

i meant to say, it wasn't a great big pidgeon, so it could be a young pidgeon, or a coo dove that doesn't realise that its a dangerous place to make a nest.
Question Author
its there now, i've googled it and found that a coo dove doesn't exist, even though thats what i've always called them, and it is infact, most probably a grey dove.
mollykins google 'collared dove' and 'wood pigeon'
Got to go out now so can't reply. This will help you identify the bird.
Get it off,it is in a ventilation area and could prove deadly to you.
Question Author
yes beejay that's it, its curled up but i can make it out as that.
its a collared dove then Molly
Question Author
yes it is bj, but is there anything we should do? even though its in a reasonably shletered area, the wind gets the this part sometimes, which could easily blow it away.
Question Author
It looks like its slowly falling off . . . .
