dog keeps scratching carpet

he does this at night my carpet is starting to get pull marks in it
why does he do this?
can i do anything to stop him??

Hi, i have a jack russell patterdale cross as well and a lot of what you have said is the same with ours, we have had him since a pup, we dont leave him with his bed if we have to leave him for anytime because he will rip it up, he must have got through 4 or 5 beds and he isnt even 1 yet, we let him have one at night but I put a towel over it, which has a lot of pull marks on it from him doing what i presume the same thing you dog does, maybe you could get him a blanket or something and rather than pull at the carpet can pull on that?
