Squirrel repellent

How can you repel squirrells from eating your rafters? Is there a spray or a technique, rather than having to be physically present to shoo it away? Thank you

The answer actually, is find out how they are getting in there in the first place and eliminate it... (the entrance, not neccessarily the squirrell)...

They haven't got into the roof space yet, but they're gnawing their way through at the moment. The person whose house it is, has also got a cat, so things that repel cats wouldn't be appropriate. Thanks for all your answers so far. Any ideas appreciated.

I would have thought that the cats would scare off the squirrels.

Our first cat used to chase them over from the woods across from our house. He never caught one - or not when we were watching.

Apparently it gets on to their roof via other roofs. It looks like the hot chilli spray would be a good idea.

A neighbor used hot pepper spray on a bird feeder to keep the squirrells out. It probably works but its a terrible sight to behold. The squirrels rub their mouths to try and remove the spray and, in the process, get it in their eyes and nose. They literally go crazy... I would advise against that remedy, unless you're truly heartless...

Put some `Vick` on a cotton wool balls and chuck them around your loft where he/she gets in.

The squirrel hasn't got into the loft yet, but is trying to. Is there a kinder spray than the hot chilli spray?

Those lovely cuddly grey squirrels are actually a tree rat with a bushy tail so assuming your loft is reasonably empty and you've run out of other ideas try one of those electronic mice repellers. They do work and they are humane. Nevertheless I do agree you should fill any hole for a proper job - prevention is better than cure.

As a pest controller I can honestly say that the electronic pest repellents are a total waste of time, if they worked, every pest control company would be making a fortune by selling and installing them!

Squirrels can be a nightmare if they get into the loft, major problems and so much damage, I would suggest getting a live trap cage with some fruit and nuts in it, squirrels are really easy to catch, then drive it a long way away, 20 miles + and release it, well actually it is illegal to release it as it is not and indigenous species so really you should kill it. Mind your fingers when picking up the cage, they have a Savage bite!

Squirrels always look cute, but I definitely wouldn't want them in my house, they'd cause a riot! There are some good products here that might help you, including a humane squirrel cage trap as has been suggested in a previous answer. The organic repellent could be useful as it can be used both indoors and out and is harmless to animals and kids etc.
