Runner Duck scratching himself and making him sore
3 Answers
We raised 3 runner ducklings that are now10 weks old, They all went through there first moult 3 weeks ago, the male since then had kept scratching his face just below his ear, we managed to pin him down to have a look at it and he has a yellow thickning of skin which is a yellowish colour, I phoned the vets for some advice as to get him in the car would be a nightmare, ( i think he will redecorate the car interior brown and he would be so stressed) the vet said to hibi scrub it and apply savlon which we have been doing since thursday night, it was looking loads better and the scabby bit was coming away, But he has started really scratching again and is starting to make it bleed, He is very fit and healthy, No lice on him as we use the powder and the pink spray, all other bantams and ducks are fine, has anyone got any ideas of what else i can use on him, Can ducks get mites under the skin?
thanks

Not much help I'm sorry but I did try!
I spoke to the vet which they suggested bringing him in to see them, When i got there the vet said that she did not know anything about Ducks ( wish she had said that on the phone) when i got there i explained that george the duck had maulted and that his coop was always clean and that i use net tex products total mite kill on all the birds and in coop along with the pink spray so i knew it was not mites or lice, the bird is fit and healthy like all the others and eating well but it was just this sore patch that i was concerned about, she said that she could not give me anything unless they ruled out mites first, 2 skin scrapes later costing £30.00 guess what no mites, then she decided to phone a friend of hers for advice and in the end after waiting over an hour with 1 stressed duck she gave him fuciderm for cats and dogs that i already had in the cupboard but was told not to use earlier......... oh and the £60.00 fee for him.....I am not a happy bunny this afternoon, the best bit is when i queried it she said well it should be more i charged you half price for the skin scrapes
