Fear of dogs
28 Answers
I have quite a bad fear of dogs, I wouldnt say a phobia as such as som dogs I am ok with. I dont like dogs that jump up or certain types like rotties, dobermans or yappy dogs. Two of my closest mates got puppies last year, now they are quite big and jump up and go mental so I dont go round their houses anymore. One of these mates is due to give birth in October and I would love to go see her and baby when he's born but I know I will panic. I get myself in such a state. I have just seen a download programme on Paul McKennas site for £15.00 to help overcome fear of dogs. Do you think its worth it? Would you try it and have you tried any hypnotherapy where it has worked?

i have tried tapes but found it hard to concerntrate - but then i was also told by a hypnotist that i was obviously one of the few people who were hard to hypnotise...i just couldnt do it...
i am saving to have hypnotherapy to help me with my claustrophobia and to help me be tidier...( may be a lost cause on the tidyness though...whole family is the same, lol)

It is quite strange that we find people with a fear of dogs will often lose that fear around our Wolfhounds, although they are very big dogs they are very gentle and calm and they would certainly sense your fear and respect that and they would let you approach them before they approached you. We have had many children with a fear of dogs just run up and wrap their arms around the necks of these lovable dogs with no fear at all. They really do have this affect on people, very strange but you would need to live with a wolfhound to understand them, we consider ourselves very privileged to be able to share our lives with 3 of these magnificent creatures.
A few years ago, I used to see a couple in Plymouth walking their Wolfies........they were the most laid back dogs imaginable. Often the biggest are.
4Get...maybe you should speak with your friends-tell them what's bothering you,and see if you can try to get used to their dogs in small steps. I am sure they miss seeing you as much as you do them.

Good luck pasta - hopefully the dogs haev been trained not to jump up by now, I'm not afraid of dogs but I find it daunting when they jump up - I was "greeted" by two completely strange dogs when I went to the vet the other day! Your mates will need to control the dogs jumping when the baby comes so you might not find it as bad as you think - fingers crossed for you that the download helps, I have heard that they can be useful aids.
I am a long time dog owner whose dogs are quite boisterous when allowed to be. I am not afraid of any dog per se (even the couple who have bitten me) but I would be most unhappy around a husky that jumps and nips....that's not phobia, its plain old common sense. Talk to your mates before the husky does it to a stranger who invokes the dangerous dogs act!
mmmm by a year I would not be very worried about jumping up although its not really on and should have been dealt with, but nipping should have been stopped by the end of teething or very shortly after. A nip from a dog with adult teeth can be nasty. If they were my dogs, they would be leashed when visitors are around and made to behave...as i said before I don't think you are silly to be afraid of them, I would be worried myself. Also as i said before your friend should be thinking about the consequences should the dog bite someone who is not prepared to be forgiving. How much if anything does your mate know about raising dogs?
4get. Paul McKennas CD's and books are worthwhile and full of common sense. In my opinion, it would be a good idea to try and conquer your fear or at least to handle it better. You don't have to end up loving dogs or being a dog owner, but for your own sake and for any future kids it would be a worthwhile exercise. Parents can make their kids paranoid about dogs and a kid screaming because they see a dog is ridiculous and is learned behaviour in my opinion. Dogs should be controlled and owners should be responsible. People, in general, are more dangerous though than dogs!!
