Naming a new puppy......
5 Answers
We lost our 11 month old border collie to chronic liver disease and cannot come to terms with the void it has left us with.
We loved him and miss him so much.
Friends are suggesting we get another puppy but I am scared I will not love him as much as the one we just lost.
They are also saying we should give the new puppy the same name in honour of our first one.
Any opinions please.
Thank you .

You might not love them in exactly the same way but I'm sure you'll love them none the less.
Just make sure you are getting one for keeps before you make a decision.
Why not see if you can meet a potential new one at a rescue place and arrange for some home visits if it wouldn't stress the dog out too much, before you commit?

I think you need to think about why you have a dog. It sounds as though you had a great deal of emotion invested in your previous collie and you will never ever replace this. I new puppy will inevitably find a place in your hearts and your life but it will be different and needs its own identity. I personally feel you should wait a while, but thats based on my own experience of feeling intense pain when a pet has passed away. My dogs are very much part of the family. However I know of others who have found a new dog within days and it has worked well for them. They do however spend their whole free time walking miles and miles, so a dog accompanying them is ubiquitous with their lifestyle.
In any event i do think the new dog should have its own name.

You will love your new dog or puppy very much you might love him/her differently but you will love your new friend and he/she will be your 'new best friend'.
I would give the newcomer a new name - I like 'human' names for my little furry friends. Get a baby names book.
Good luck with your new friend.

When Jetspoon died in May we said we wouldn't have another dog as her passing was just too painful however...As many ABers know after just 2 months Coco came to live with us. She is so different in every way to Jet who is a hard act to follow. The name Jet suits Coco much more than her own does (Coco's black and Jet was the beige/black colours of a G/S) but we would never change her name out of respect for Jet. Go on give a dog a loving home it's so rewarding.
