alternative to steroid spray for dog?
3 Answers
Our cavie has itching problems. Dont want to use steroid sprays and injections. He had is blood tested last summer. The results said he was highly allergic to tofarinae,, dustmite, tyrophagus acarus and flea saliva. A vaccination was made specifically for his allergies which he gets every 4 weeks....but clearly it isnt working. We tried piriton too but to no avail! Any abbers know any safe alternatives. We feel so helpless...he cries when he scratches, but his skin looks normal! thanks

It doesn't sound as bad as your dogs but I thought I'd tell you what I do.Twice a month during the 'flea period' I wash and condition him using a human tea tree shampoo and conditioner. When he has the conditioner on I give him a really good brush through and then rinse thoroughly. He also has, as do all my dogs, garlic capsules which not only keep them healthy of heart but act as a natural flea repellent. I brush him everyday as this keeps his natural oils flowing and reduces dander in his coat.
On another note, has he been tested for Syringomyelia as this can show itching as a symptom.

Here is a link to some information on Syringomyelia, which was what crossed my mind when I read your post.

Anyone considering buying a Cavalier should be aware of the condition and ensure the parents are tested, which is very expensive (MRI scan) but can save a lot of heartache for you and your dog.
