Why is it that every time we get round to early Autumn/Sept there seems to be an overabundance of Spiders everywhere --espcially in the house?
Seem to be forever bumping into small webs made by small spiders ( corners of windows are covered in them) and watching monster spiders chase across the floor in front of the telly.
This is a phenomenon which is most common at this time of the year. Does anybody know WHY ?

Because they sense the change in the season and are coming inside for the winter. Particularly noticeable if it's going to rain. I absolutely hate them.

Me too, prudie, I have the Hoover pipe on standby!!
I read something the other day about this, didnt take particular notice of most of it but apparently at this time of the year they are looking for mates.
It's not true about the mating thing.
The reality is, that the spiders are coming to get YOU!!!!
They send the little ones to scout ahead of them, and once they can see where you are sleeping the big-as-dinner-plate monsters come in a hide under your bed.....
Sorry guys but I've put out signs directing them to clean sheet, towels and the bathroom, have indicated suitable nest sites and assured them the hoover is on R & R. Now lets see how keen those Mozzies are to bite me.
It's not that they are coming in - house spiders and garden spiders are different species.

It is because they are looking for mates, so are more mobile, which increases the chances of you seeing them.
yes that's right andy (how's the tour?)
I was reading in bed last night and a HUUUUGE spider was starting to climb up the wall. No way would I have turned the light off and gone to sleep with that stalking about. I made quite a bit of noise banging but I managed to kill it.
Spiders are in the house all the time and they don`t come indoors for warmth at all, and when you put them outside they are likely to die from the cold. They also don`t come up plug holes in the bath or sink, as they are hiding away in the day and come out looking for flies and a drink of water from the bath, but then can`t climb out again. All British spiders are harmless. Take a look at the advert to the right of this post `Pictures of Every Spider`
I don't understand why people are so anti-spider - I love 'em, my garden is full of them - and my mother used to say that spiders only live in a happy house. My house is therefore very happy!
boxy I am very pleased for you that, apparently, you don't sleep with your mouth open
'Tour' Dotty? Have I missed something?
Yo ttfn, only when I drool....
I put conkers around my house, the spiders don't like them apparently. Every year I get fresh conkers but this year I was a bit late finding some and had 7 massive spiders one after the other - urgh. Now the conkers are in and I haven't seen a spider since so here's hoping.
ttfn - the idea that adults swallow eight spiders in a lifetime is a myth.

It's actually one of the very first Internet myths - a woman put it up to see how long it would take to spread - not long it seems!

ttfn I do sometimes. lol This time of year there are spiders webs all over the fences and bushed in my garden covered in dew. I hung the washing out last week I left a large gap where a fat spider had anchored its web to the washing line and the Camelia bush below it.
what an interesting theory pips, I've not heard that one. I like conkers too, there are three in my bag at the moment, I picked them up on the way from the station this afternoon.
Now slugs -- who keeps bringing slugs in downstairs? I have disposed of four in the last couple of weeks, they've been sliddering about all over the place. Can't think why, there is nothing for a slug as far as I can see why are they appearing, how do they get in?
I did swallow a moth once :-(
I have swallowed a variety of flies in my time, but not from choice.
