Wardens on Lundy Island
8 Answers
There was a girl in my form at school named Shirley Hooper who married a local boy named David Saunders. In the early 60s, the pair of them became wardens on Lundy Island.
Watching 'Coast' on TV, I see that one of the current experts on Lundy Island is a Nicola Saunders and I am wondering if she is related to my old schoolfriend. Does anyone know anything about David and Shirley Saunders or how long they were the wardens there?

There is a documentary on bbc4 this week featuring the life of housewife Shirley Saunders as she goes shopping on the mainland for a fortnightly shopping trip, and is picked up by boat by ornithologist husband and their children to go back to their home in Skomer. An interesting look at Britain's past in the early 1960s. Programme is called Britain on Film (episode 3 of series 2) published by BBC Scotland but features all the films shot by the Rank Organisation "Look at Life" series as shown in cinemas in the 1960s. Well worth watching if you are interested in the ecology and history of Skomer.
