Rover has to have a tooth out....
I took my good cat Rover to the vet last night for his six-month blood tests for his kidney disease, and mentioned to the nurse that his breath is rank. She managed to look in his mouth and found that one of his molars is loose and it looks like he has an abcess, so they are recommending that the tooth comes out.
Because of his illness (which you wouldn't know to look at him), they need to check all his bloods just to make sure his kidneys (and possibly thyroid) can stand the anaesthetic - if so then I have booked him in for Friday, so we can bring him home and coddle him at the weekend if need be.
I know my cat-loving AB friends will know how I feel - bad for not knowing his tooth is horrid (although he hasn't stopped eating), and worried about the anaesthetic for my good boy. It has to be done though, the nurse mentioned a risk of septicaemia if we don't get it seen to.
Ah, my poor boy! - but he's just had his tea and he's leaping about like a mad thing, not at all like we are with toothache!

My last cat - grumpy old George - adopted me when he was in his teens. I took him to the vet for a check-up. When the vet checked his teeth and said that many of them were rotten and had to come out. But he was lucky - there was a huge build up of gunk on his teeth but they were in good condition. But even then he was much brighter after getting his teeth cleaned.
He had herpes and chlamydia and both these things seem to make his gums sore and red.
I am sure that Rover will feel much better for his trip to the dentist. Do you have any pictures of him? Or are you on FB?

I think that the average life span for a moggie is about 14 so 12 is not very old.
When I started my voluntary job 5 years ago the manager had a cat and she was about 18 or 19. She is still going strong - but senile, doing the toilet every where but the litter trays and screaming her heart out at silly time of the day.
Frankie and Merlin are 5 and a half years old - they might live until they are six if they are good and leave me in peace for five minutes. They are upstairs and being quiet just now - that makes me suspicious.
I am off to surf around the net and will return.

PS Have asked for a wheelie bin for my birthday to keep the kitties in when they get too much to cope with. ;-)

Lovely - he looks like a youngster and all cute and innocent. Frankie takes a better picture as he is black and white but Merlin is just a black face with two staring eyes. In the dark she is dangerous, she gets under your feet and darts around.
Anyway - am off to enter some nice competitions and create my wishlist for Christmas.

When I had twin brother cats years back, they had cat flu at about 5, and they both developed kidney disease (this was well before the treatment for it for cats had been developed) and died at 10 and 11, which I was told at the time was an average age - taking into account kitten mortality, etc., However my old cat lived to 19, my friend's siamese was 21 - so there could be lots of life in Rover yet! He sleeps a lot at the moment but is full of beans and boingy when he's awake. The others are 11 and 7, and I just wish they all liked each other.....
Little update - the vet was on the phone to me for 20 minutes tonight, going through all Rover's blood results - nothing much has changed and his kidneys are no better but equally no worse. This means he can have his dental op tomorrow, and all being well I can pick him up after work, all done. I'm not good with anaesthesia myself, I worry about it for the animals too, fingers crossed for Rover tomorrow.
Hopefully he will be okay with the anaesthetic - the vets wouldn't go ahead with the op if there were any real risk to him.
Unlike small furries - I remember seeing something like Animal Hospital when the vet picked up a small rodent or bunnie and it just keeled over and died. The vets face was a picture.

Is Rover feeling okay today?
When I got up Frankie was sleeping on his half-demolished armchair. He was on his side with his eyes wide open. I waved my hand in front of him and there was no movement from him at all. Then I shook the 'sweetie tub' and he miraculously leapt to his feet and tried to mug me for some munchies.
I am off to do some cleaning up - the kitchen floor needs cleaning. No doubt that will tire me out and we will all have to toddle off for a nap.

Thanks for asking, wolfy - he's sleeping a lot, started his new meds this morning - antibiotic and a liquid NSAID for any pain. Trouble is, he didn't want much breakfast but I've checked with the vet and they said as long as there is food in his stomach, the NSAID should be OK without more food.
Black Spot excelled himself, he carefully pooed on the attic landing at about 7am. Making his point - "you won't let me out, I'll do it <here>". Little toad. I plan to open the catflap at 5pm today!

I bet that Rover feels so much better with his teeth out, his gum should heal up pretty quickly. Only a few hours to go and you can throw them all out of the house - and they will turn around and go back in again.
I live in a city centre and it would be too dangerous to let the thugs out and if they did become outside cats I would spend all my time worrying about them.
I was trying to not laugh at Frankie last night. He had been demolishing his armchair and managed to get a claw or two stuck in the material. He managed to get the rest of his body back onto the ground. He was sitting there with one leg in the air and still attached to the chair and trying to look as if he was grooming himself. Every so often he would look to see if I was watching him and then try and get the claws out of the chair. They hate it when they have done something stupid and a human is watching.
This link, hopefully, should lead you to my babies.
