The film 'Snow Dogs' used a variety of spitz breeds, Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes etc and their crosses. It is a generic term to describe any of the northern spitz breeds and sadly the film has resulted in many people buying these breeds or crosses which are often totally unsuitable for the homes, needing a lot of exercise, being noisy and moulting a lot, very hard to train and difficult to catch if let off the lead.
The rescues are full to overflowing with them and people are still breeding and advertising them as such. Being 'seriously cute' is not a good reason for wanting a dog.

I can only speak from my experience but our Elkhound/Spitz was a great family dog for us. She had a healthy life up to the age of 18 when her time was up (that was about 15 years ago). She had a lovely manner and was a very happy dog. She also gave us 10 lovely puppies, 9 of whom we rehomed. We lived across from a huge field so she did get plenty of excersize daily. Still miss her.
