Did you know about the demise of Mercedes the Polar Bear from Aviemore? She was put to sleep at the grand old age of 30. One article that I read said that she was not only in pain but she was getting grumpy - not a good thing in an animal with big, big teeth.

One of the Glaslyn ( North Wales )chicks from 2006 has returned to Scotland to breed. "Black 80" was ringed on the 28th of June three years ago at five weeks old and has been spotted in Dumfries and Galloway over the weekend. His female partner arrived earlier last week. Both birds have been mating and nest building and strengthening.
Black 80 was around that area of Scotland last year also presumably with the same female (not ringed) but did not breed (extremely unusual for ospreys to breed at two years old).
