My dog rolls in anything disgusting

When I take my dog walking in the country he manages to roll in the most disgusting things (animal pooh, bird carcases etc). Any suggestions on how to stop this (other than keeping him on a lead all the time)?

Can't be done. It's the dog equivalent of perfume - he thinks . . .

He is definitely a dog then and like all dogs he is ruled by his nose. Mine will go through the whole sit.stay lie down thing but give him a tasty scent and he forgets the lot.

Every time our dog was bathed she would go out and find the most disgusting thing she could to roll in.

My youngest dog is like this too - usually quite obedient, but fox poo or such like, she's away! i don't really think that there's much you can do about it - with their sensitive noses they catch any scent long before a human does. And strangely enough, although she loves water as a rule, she hates being hosed off!

Mine rolled in a maggoty sheep carcass some weeks back- which was nice...

Years ago, my dog disappeared to a pig farm, where according to the farmer, he 'played' in the stall. Then on the way home he decided to roll in a mossy burn (a springer spaniel - always in water).
He came home grey (pigsh..) and green(moss).
We had to tie him to the clothes pole and hose him down to make sure he really was ours. His ruff was green for weeks.

...so when you get them home and wash them the next problem is the smell of we dog.

When I was a kid we went on a car treasure hunt - Dad, Mum, Brother, Me and Rajah our German Shepherd. It was a beautiful summer day in the wilds of Northumberland and at the first stop Rajah found some farmyard perfume and applied it liberally behind his ears. We managed to get a bucket of water and sluiced him off then back in the Ford Zodiac. Hot day - stink - at the next stop my brother decided to travel with a friend. Unfortunately, mum's friend decided to help by spraying dog with cologne. That made it worse. Good news was Dad was so keen to get the day over with that we came third in the treasure hunt.
