This morning , about 10am, a very persistent bird (we think it was a wagtail ) spent minutes banging his / her head, beak and body against the upper windows of the house. not just one window, it made its way around the building to repeat its behaviour around the corner. It woke me up, such was the banging , it really was going for it. We have lived here for two and a half years and not witnessed any bird do this before. We wondered if he was attracted to his reflection in the window ? Any ideas ?

I had the same experience with a robin a couple of years ago. I was told by a neighbour that they are territorial and it had probably mistaken its reflection for an interloper. I can't say that it is true, but you never see a flock of robins :-)

Thanks for that Vicasso, indeed one doesn't see a flock of robins ! What surprised me with this little chap earlier was his persistence . I was worried that he would injure himself such were the blows he kept raining down ! Bless him .
male wagtails can be quite territorial too so he can see his reflection and wants to punch his own light out
.... obviously the bird version of a Japanese fighting fish Rowan!
