Over the last five years my bird table has been visited by the local Jay population, I was just wondering if any of the ones that are there, as I type in fact, are the same ones that started visiting five years back or are they their offspring, in other words, how long do Jays live?

Years ago, I had a pet Jackdaw for 15 years, Jays are from the same family so I would suggest 15yrs+

Before anyone complains it wasn't caged, could come and go as it pleased, always came home.

Thank you redman.
Hi Baldrick, interesting ti hear about your jackdaw. I raised a crow that had fallen from it's nest as a chick. It was an amazing creature, it learnt so quickly, was affectionate and very intelligent. I would say it was more intelligent than a cat. It was free to come and go like your jackdaw and when it acquired it's adult plumage it joined the wild. An experience I will always treasure. I think it returned about a year later but if it was the same one it was too wary to get close to.
Yeah, that was how I came to have mine, kept in large cage for 18mths during which time I taught it to talk, just basic things like 'hello' and the Dogs name, that was good for a laugh. It was odd to have a flock of wild Jackdaws land in the orchard and have one come up and say hello!!
