I am very concerned to read that hen harrier populations have decreased by 27% since 2004 and I completely agree we need to take action on driven grouse shooting.

I know that animal welfare issues are close to our heart in Hove and Portslade and I’m proud to live in a place where so many people care deeply about animal welfare.

Since becoming your MP I am proud to have taken a stand on many animal welfare issues. For example, I joined the successful campaign to protect funding for the National Wildlife Crime Unit which as part of the Police Force is able to prevent animal welfare crime and arrest those who commit it. I also contacted the Home Office Minister to encourage him to support legislation that will better protect animals on duty and ensure more robust sentencing for those harming these animals.

Furthermore, I completely agree that we should use this chance to build back better and recognise the importance of nature and our role in it. This is an issue the Labour Party are deeply committed to and my colleague and Shadow Business Secretary, Ed Miliband MP, has recently commented on the Government’s green investment announcement. I completely agree when he said:

“We have consistently called for a recovery which has energy efficiency at its heart, and will welcome any measures which achieve that…

It also needs to be part of a much broader and bigger scale strategy for getting back on track for net zero which includes a zero carbon army of young people getting back to work, investment in nature conservation, driving forward renewable energy, helping our manufacturers be part of the green transition and a plan for our transport network.

The French government has promised 15 billion euros for a green recovery, the German government 40 billion euros. The UK government £3 billion so far. When the moment demands the Government creates the most ambitious green recovery possible, the Government has not so far risen to the challenge.’

Please rest assured myself and the Labour Party are deeply committed to building back better from this crisis and we will seek every opportunity to urge the government to act on grouse shootings.

Ladybirder, before we were cast out of north Norfolk we were very lucky in having Norman Lamb as our MP. A really caring, helpful man who I met many times and who gave us a great deal of help. Retired now of course. Now we get this! Our local district Council is still North Norfolk District Council.

Hi, I had a reply Ladybirder

Thank you for contacting me about the protection of birds of prey and driven grouse shooting.



Individuals should be free to manage wildlife within the law, and that the Government should only intervene when there is good reason to do so. The Government recognises the conservation and economic benefits that shooting sports bring to rural communities. A study in 2010 by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust showed that predator control resulted in significant increases in the breeding success of ground nesting birds such as curlew, golden plover and lapwing.


All wild birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and there are strong penalties in place for offences committed against birds of prey and other wildlife, with most wildlife crimes carrying up to an unlimited fine and/or a six-month custodial sentence. To address concerns about illegal killing of birds of prey, senior Government and enforcement officers have identified raptor persecution as a national wildlife crime priority. The National Wildlife Crime Unit monitors and gathers intelligence on wildlife crime, including raptor persecution, and aids police forces in their investigations when required.

Ministers have always been clear of the need to phase out rotational burning of protected blanket bog to conserve vulnerable habitats. Real progress is being made in promoting sustainable alternatives and legislation is being looked at which could help achieve this. Ministers have also been encouraging landowners to adopt sustainable options and continue to work with them constructively. The England Peat Strategy will be published later this year which will detail further how we can protect, restore, and reduce damage to our peatlands.



While there are no current plans to carry out a review of the management of grouse moors, I agree that wildlife and habitats should be respected and protected, and that the law is observed. The Government will continue to work to ensure a sustainable, mutually beneficial relationship between shooting and conservation.



The Government is concerned about hen harrier populations. It has taken the lead on the Hen Harrier Action Plan which sets out what will be done to increase hen harrier populations in England and includes measures to stop illegal persecution.

However, our MP now is the Broadland MP! Even though we are nowhere near Broadland and our district council is NNDC, we have been put into Broadland for election purposes. Only a mile behind us is Breckland. Daft!
