I've noticed something strange over the last few years.

Often during the night in these winter months (anywhere from 1:00am till dawn) I hear bird song exactly like the dawn chorus in summer!

It's definitely not the drink (joking) as a farmer neighbour remarked on hearing the same thing recently....anyone else noticed this?

Incidentally, we're in a remote rural area in the north Pennines.

We got in at 02:30 am on Sunday morning & the birds were singing away. We've also noticed it at other times during the night too.

We live in Bedfordshire.

Robins sing at all hours - it's a territorial call i think - i always remember coming out of clubs at uni and stuff and being amazed at hearing birds chirping away at 1am, think i read something (on here actually) about it before and i'm sure it was robins.

Hi,

See my previous question a few weeks back, to which Becks refers

My robin is still singing merrily all night!

nk I read somewhere that there are, at this time of year, birds which have not paired but which seek to maintain a territory, and that this applies particularly to robins of both sexes. Therefore they sing their hearts out to maintain what they have.
First two words of my post should have been 'I think'!
We have a resident Robin that follows my husband in & out of the garage. We also now have a pair of Robins feeding, hunting & hopefully mating too!

Both the male and the female Robin sing throughout the year, save for a short time in late summer when they're moulting. The  first up in the morning and the last to go to bed  many do sing throughout the night. Anything can start them off - usually lights, but even in the darkest of nights a sudden noise will stimulate them into song.

Occasionally Blackbirds will also join in the nocturnal choir practice.

nightingale ?!!!
They're still sunning themselves in Africa Dom, and don't arrive here until April - but Nightingales are relatives of the Robin and can be heard singing later in the year.
