The old/young divide

Has anyone else noticed the animosity between the two groups yet? So far seen ideas ranging from stocks and bootcamps to hanging and murder for young teen rioters and this isn't just inclusive of the rioters as at other times the generalization of "chav" is usually spat out by an older generation individual at "Todays youth" the young are not much better with no respect, name calling which I can't even repeat here and the end result is them "throwing granny" into a care home at the first point they can. Why is there so much anger/hatred/animosity towards each other? We all were young once and most of us will become old but many of us seem to forget this and become extremely detatched with this fact. Do we need to reeducate the young about respect and do we need to reeducate the elders that not all youths are strange violent animals?

The only difference that i can see is that the "old" as you put it, has personal experience of two generations and the "young" have experience of one generation..

Can you remember a popular examination question which stared.."Compare and Contrast................!!"
I was going to post something like this myself...

I was just shocked to read one poster say 'shoot them at birth' and another one responded 'What, and waste a good bullet'

And they worry about the youth of today?
the old forget, the young don't know.

(german proverb)
It's the impotence of age trying to give the impudence of youth a good kicking.....
Ankou......or better still

"One can have 40 years experience or one year's experience 40 times"

(sqad proverb)

Sqad I've seen many elder people become detached almost as if the youth are an alien breed and then they are treated as such, but this road also goes two ways with the youths thinking they'll never get old and elder people have came from another solar system.
Has it always been like this or just in this day and age?
W3 LOL.......it has always been like that.

Ummm the hatred and evil that has been spouted from some of the mouths here is scary and then they wonder why the youth are so 'evil'? Well they've had great teachers!
how about:

"the young know the rules, but the old know how to get around them."

reminds me of the mp expenses etc

(proverbial proverb)
Ankou ;-)
That's my point...

And I can't get my head around all the pointless threads about it.

'put them in the stocks'
'shoot them'

It's not going to happen....so why bother talking about it? It seems to be people of a certain generation who think violence/looting should be met with death!!
I agree, it is troubling how often I am seeing pictures of rioters/looters of varying ages (usually up to about 35) labelled as "yoofs".
Young once ? Being young is unavoidable. Behaving badly is assumed to be under control of your willpower, and so is a choice you are held responsible for.

The problem you highlight is to do with looking at a group rather than individuals and decribing the group as a whole. Unfair to some individuals. Problem is it's probably necessary to get a handle on obvious problems. Otherwise you're overwhelmed from the start.
Ed....let me get this clear...........are you suggesting that the "looters" have a fairly wide age distribution, with no predominant age group?
lol...the media (and AB) seem to be concentrating on the 'yoofs' so they can act suitably outraged, and complain and the decline in society...
*about...not and
youth is when you blame all your troubles on your parents; maturity is when you learn that everything is the fault of the younger generation.
'shoot them at birth'. 'What, and waste a good bullet'. You do realise this was banter and not serious don't you ? It sometimes amazes me what some seem to take seriously, and on occasion respond inappropriately because of that viewpoint.

But yes, I will go along with the idea that there has been a lot of flippant remarks recently about the subject. I think it is one way folk have of coping with this sort of outrage.
It's not taken seriously...

It's just couldn't imagine my Mother ever speaking like that.
Families are no longer multi-generational so they no longer have that experience of mutual care and respect.
