Apple passwords

I have recently acquired an iPod Touch, so am obviously a little bit new to this lark. I have set up initial passwords for iTunes and Apple ID, but each time I access either of them I've had to re-set the passwords. I've done this four times now and each time I have created a new password, it isn't recognised.

I haven't used any characters which are considered unrecognisable and also been careful when using upper and lower case characters.

Has anyone else experienced problems setting up passwords with Apple and/or iTunes?

I've tried going through the Apple web site for solutions, but it's like a minefield!!!
