Whilst looking on the Internet for a supplier of an electric (battery operated) wall clock, I saw this "Our clocks do not have an irritating tick"
This made me think, Why do the manufacturers of most electric clocks make them tick?

Ooh Robert, do you have a link for this? I hate the ticking clock at my bedside. Years ago clocks ticking used to get incorporated in nightmares I would have. I still have a problem with the ticking.
Not keen on the electric ones but I can't sleep properly without a clock ticking so have a mechanical one by the side of my bed. Annoys me if I forget to wind it and it stops in the night because I wake up if it goes quiet
My Grandfather clock ticks like you wouldn't believe it...I never notice it and like bensmum if it stops I know immediately.....when we have guests or family to stay I have to stop it or they get no sleep...funny that the brain can adjust like that...
Clockmakers should have a "stop tick" button on electric clocks.
Mr Alba's bedside clock is battery-operated, but digital display so no tick.
Our living-room clock dings or pings on the hour. We don't notice it, but we do notice when it doesn't.
They make them click because a lot of people prefer stepping second hand as opposed to sweep second hands.

If you don't like the tick look for any clock described as having a sweep second hand.

such as http://www.seiko.co.u...ocks/c/wall/m/qxa486s
Do they ? I have a number of electric clocks and only one ticks; the one that move the seconds hand a step at a time.

If there are those that do then probably to recapture the nostalgic sound of a mechanical 'clockwork' wind up clock.
nothing more irritataing than the tick tick tick of a clock if you cant sleep.
I find a ticking clock really soothing. A bit like a purring cat. I must be a bit weird.
Thank you for that link Chuck. There is a store in Kendal that sells them so will take a look. It has to have a big face so I can read it without glasses too.
