Age Related Macular Degeneration
6 Answers
I have age related macular degeneration and want to delay it (partial blindness) as long as possible. Recently I read that saffron pills would help but have googled it and cannot find anything to support the claim. Does anyone know anything about it and most of all, whether it works or not. Thanks for any help even if it is negative.

all the rest of the stuff I found was iffy in the extreme but here it is

the usual issue, as here is that the trial will be administering a lot of the extract (20mg a day) and that's not saffron as you would cook with it but an extract tablet.

Thanks TWR and woofgang. I have read a couple of the articles and have reached the conclusion that I had better wait a bit until a more definite conclusion has been reached, and also as you have said TWR, I would not take anything not advised by my doctor because it may not mix well with other medication I am taking. I am already taking some tabs called I-Caps containing lutein and zeaxanthin which were advised by the specialist at the hospital. They are supposed to help but nothing guaranteed. I suppose it is desperation that makes me look around for whatever is going. Can't think of anything worse in the way of disabilities than blindness, although I also think all disabilities are bad.
The initial areds study investigation and findings are located here
http:// www.nei .nih.go v/amd/
The areds 2 study started in 2006 and the results are supposed to be out some time during the second quarter of this year.
http:// www.are ds2.org /
The initial areds showed preservision to be the supplements closest to the recommended formula with different formula no for smokers.
My advice would be a good diet (or the recommended supplements if you are unable to eat the necessary foodstuff) and good UV protective eyewear.
