Problem After Windows 10 Updated Today

Switched Laptop on this morning. Logged on and screen displayed that is was installing updates. In the end it took around 3 hours. Since thaqt point I am having problems with internet. I can log on to a site, lets say BBC News. I click on some content which within seconds would normally take me to that new page. What is happening is that the new content/page is not found and the screen shows a message that the page cannot be displayed.

It appears that my internet connection has been lost, even though it still shows as being connected. I have to disconnect and then reconnect to get it back. Given that you click on lots of different content within a site, this really is annoying to say the least. What can I do? This has only happened since Windows spent three hours allegedly to give me a "better experience"!!

Try resetting the TCP/IP stack. (Don't worry, it's easier than it sounds!):

Press the Windows key and X on your keyboard together. Select 'Command Prompt (Admin)'

In the box which appears type this text:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Press 'Enter'

A message will appear telling you that you need to restart your computer to complete the action. (It can sometimes take a short while for the message to show). Follow that instruction.

Thanks Buenchico, your suggestion has worked. I am very grateful. Was it just coincidence that the problem occurred following the microsoft windows installing a load of updates? THe main thing is it is now working, and I'm a happy chappy

It appears I spoke too soon. The problem is back, where I might get into a website, but then click on a topic and get "this site cannot be reached. I use Opera as my browser. I tried Firefox and had the same result. What else can try? I feel sure it is related to the windows updates as my web experience up to that point was pretty good

I have had my laptop and desktop run that big download ckid and have had no such problem. The download would not have given you protocol issues that did not exist but it may have highlighted them.

Try running with the Edge browser ckid.

I've absolutely no idea why but simply repeating the reset of the TCP/IP stack might be all that's required. That's written from experience!

Update - Did the rest again, clicked to restart PC, went to make cuppa, came back to find "Windows is configuring updates...". On completion I tried internet - "this site cannot be reached" message!!! Yes I could scream. What it seems I have to do, click on the wi-fi icon, disable my broadband, re-enable broadband and I can get online. If I close a website down and want to go on another site I get the "site cannot be reached" and I have to repeat the process. I appreciate there seems no easy answer. I'll probably get a local techie in to see if he can identify the problem. Thanks again

Further Update - Just discovered possible clue. It appears to be linked to how long it takes to access a website. For example BBC News connected in about 6 seconds, as did BBC Weather. Amazon, Ebay and various others took longer and I got the "site cannot be reached" message. On a different laptop used at the same time in the same room, these sites are obtained, which suggests the internet in the house is ok. What is it that causes sites to take a long time to load, and time out? Just curious.

If you've got an Ethernet cable handy, try connecting your laptop to your router with that. If the problem disappears then it's clearly related to your wireless connection. If it persists, it suggests that there a problem with connecting to your ISP's domain name server.

Also check that something hasn't configured your browsers to route traffic via a proxy server. In Firefox, click on the 'hamburger' (three lines, top right), then on Options > Advanced > Network > Settings. Ensure that 'No proxy' is selected.

Thanks again Buenchico. I'm away for a few days from tomorrow, so I'll get an ethernet cable when I return, and try that and depending on outcome, your other suggestion. I have borrowed partners laptop tonight!! just could not log on to gmx.com with mine to check emails, no matter what I tried. Hers worked first go

Further Update. My Laptop performed better when hard wired via ethernet. Sometimes it still timed out. I followed the procedure suggested re open dns but the problem remains when using wi-fi, but is ok via ethernet. Would love to solve problem without calling in a techie, so any more help is appreciated.

I checked in Firefox and "no proxy" was not selected, so I selected that. It took an age for any site to load via wi-fi, but did eventually, although some timed out. How do i check Opera browser re proxy settings?
