Long Delivery Delay

In late February, I ordered some cosmetic items via Amazon as a birthday present. After I completed the order I got a message saying it would arrive on March 30th, long after the birthday. That date has gone by, and the latest report on “where’s my stuff” tells me it will now be several more days before the goods arrive. Is there some way I could have avoided this situation ? I ordered the same stuff once before, and that delivery took only a few days, so I did not expect this delay this time. In future how can I know before I complete my order whether I am agreeing to a long delay like this ?

That's happened to me too. I think it depend on where the goods are being sent from.
Can we have a link, so that we can see exactly what the Amazon trader (as I doubt that it's Amazon directly) is showing on the relevant page?
when you got the first message, its often possible to go back to your account and cancel the order on the grounds that it will arrive too late.
