They are justified, because the claim that the Pakistanis do nottake terrorism seriously can be substantiated. The Pakistani military is packed with Taleban and al Qaeda sympathisers. Pakistan was given ‘aid’ from Saudi Arabia 30-40 years ago to build schools. Unfortunately that meant that the last two generations have been indoctrinated in extreme Islamic fundamentalism, which means Pakistan today is full of dangerous people, many in military and security positions.

But it might be an instance of chopping off its nose to spite its face. The US will save a little bit of money, but it will lose everything as far as the fight on terrorism in the region.

And calling National Security Assistance ‘Aid’ is stretching the euphemism. It aids no one in Pakistan, it was an insurance policy for the US which they have decided that the premium is now too high.

It was the US paying for security measures, not to protect Pakistanis, but to protect America.
They have concluded they are wasting their money, and they are probably right.

His justification for doing so is debatable, but Pakistan does not portray an image of a country that needs aid. As YMB mentions, they are rich enough to join the Nuclear Club, so must have enough to sort any social ills out. Whatever to handouts were for, they wouldn't qualify as aid anyway.
