Thanks for beating me to it, zebo. I was taught (and taught):-
When the sound you are needing rhymes with 'bee' - then it's i before e except after c.
It works apart from a very few exceptions, which need to be learned. eg. seize and weird. Don't think that albeit counts as it's pronounced all-be-it.

True, JD - it's usually run together though so I think most lists include it. Rather think it was in the KS paper I was going through in effort to help ungrateful grandson before everything was cancelled.

What I have noticed recently on here is that many people insist on spelling the name of the Labour leader as Kier instead of Keir.

“I before e except after c” is a very misleading “rule”
What it means is: “if you hear an EE sound and you know there’s an I and an e involved then the I comes first, but think of ‘receive’ etc :-)
And conveniently ignore the other cases :-)”

JD 15.00 Mea culpa! I was expecting to close down and in a rush and my brain was wandering. Only other exception I have been able to come up with since is 'caffeine', but I expect that that applies to several other scientific terms.
