Could it be an indication of a deficiency in the diet, or a sign that one takes too many hot showers?

As you age your skin loses the ability to retain moisture in the outer layer. Too much washing, too hot water and too much foamy soap/shower gel make it worse. Use cooler water with a product that doesn't foam lots - Aveeno make a good range, including a non-soap bar.

Eczema ?

Not sure too many showers though unless you went mad on them I guess, how many do you have?

Probably just old age and the cold weather

sandy, did you work outside,,could it be sun damage??

No.  It's not sun damage.

I shower every day but somebody said every other day is enough.

It's probably just that I'm older now.
