The F-word
54 Answers
ABE I have telt you on here that the automatic censor is or was not working and e-mailed you about a question that contained the F-word. Another question used the same word but instead of censoring it, you put up a flippant response.
No doubt I will be slated for this but this is getting beyond a joke and you have done nothing to discourage those who are doing it.
What is the point of reporting questions if you do NOTHING?

I object to the use of obscene language on this site anyway but what makes it worse in these cases is the fact that ABE is aware of both of them has done nothing about either and has made light of the most recent one.
Kay how can she justify removing future posts because of obscenities when she has condoned them to-day?

I gotta be honest TLC, I haven't the foggiest how our current Ed's mind works. Some things which almost literally make you go "woahhhhh" are left, and others which have been removed leave you pondering..."why?"
Guess only thing you can do is report the ones you find offensive and hope that others do too.
Have a good night :-)

Folk'll be calling me TCP at this rate....
B00 there may be a difference between what ABers think is offensive but surely the use of the F-word can be nothing if not profane?
I can understand that ABE does not have the time to read every question and every answer and those that are reported by several members are removed pending moderation.
The ones I'm on about were brought to her attention by me and she has posted a reply on the second one.
She is not treating this as a serious matter and is mocking in the extreme.

W~M, one of the rules of this site is no profanity and that is why is it one of the reasons for which a post can be reported. The folk who set up this site consider it to be important enough to have an automatic censor (when it works.)
You say you were caned for swearing but now it is more accepted and can be used to good effect in some contexts.
There is a huge difference between a swear word being said in the heat of the moment but on this site the word has to be TYPED so it is done deliberately.
Why is there the need to use those words on this site in the first place? Is it because the person does not have the command of the English language to use a combination of words to get the message understood in another manner?
You speak of the 9 o'clock watershed but that is the point of a watershed, there is a possibilty of such language being used but the viewer has the option of not watching. If a CD has a warning sticker on it, again the purchaser has the option not to buy it.
On this site, there is the assumption that such language WILL NOT appear and yet the F-word is visible for all those looking at a the recent questions.
You say you would not come here if there were loads of swearing but what if this became the norm?

The first of the Site Rules - clickable below - tells users to avoid profanity. That seems reasonable to me. But if the rule is not to be enforced, what is the point of it? Why have rules at all if even the Editor is just going to have a giggle when they're broken?
Well put jno! AB users should read and abide by the rules but many dont and are allowed to get away with it. CORY,I live in the hope for the return of Chatterbank where users can argue and cuss to their hearts delight if they feel they must! This would keep B+S banal and swear free for the genuine posts.
I reported the first question because of the F word and noticed that it was still there, so emailed the Ed but have had no reply as yet, although that post seems to have gone, I have also reported the second question but it is still here and obviously you cannot report it again. I think there is no need for that sort of language on a Q & A site, the point of the question can still be made without profanity.
Since I used the dreaded F word in one of my posts I assume that you are referring to me.
I cannot believe in the real world that anyone is genuinely shocked or offended by it and if you are so easily disturbed then please have my sincere apologies.
I would however like to point out that I am educated to degree level and, I think, have a reasonable command of the english language.
The reason that many people use the f word etc is that times have changed, language has evolved and it is now fairly normal to hear it in every day conversation. I am not talking about conversation between those lacking education, I am talking about everyone from barristers to bin men. That's why we are not still all speaking like Chaucer, because language evolves.
I find it rude and patronising to assume that someone who uses language you personally don't approve of is some sort of illiterate moron and would imagine that the Ed probably feels the same, hence her reluctance to ban perfectly reasonable posts.Thank God for common sense.

noxlumos, No one has named anyone in particular and yes bad language is used more now by people from all walks of life but only if they choose. Being moronic has nothing to do with this issue its just that the majority of AB users see no need to F and cuss. Im sure you are an educated person but that does'nt account for the use of bad language on here. The choice is ours,to cuss or not to cuss, I prefer not, simple as that.
Well Kay glad to see that you are psychic and feel able to post the opinions of " the majority" of AB users and not just your own single opinion, unless of course they have all emailed you and asked you to speak on their behalf. Oddly enough I think both scenarios are reasonably unlikely so I'm left with the conclusion that actually you only speak for yourself which since there is more than 3 members of answerbank to my knowledge makes you actually a minority. If that is your own opinion then all well and good but please don't pretend to speak for the majority as that clearly isn't the case and I think that most people don't give a hoot if the odd swear word appears in a reasonable context. Obviously the Ed doesn't particularly care either. What concerns me more to be honest is the virulent hatred that appears on this site, but then that would be apparently ok with you as long as the KKK were nice and polite.
