Private chats and correspondence
23 Answers
I am seeing a lot of suggestions regarding private chats and answers between two people that one considers should not be made public and would prefer to talk about as a one to one.
AB is a public site and all posts made here are seen by all the members and general public. To see an answer stating "I'll email you" or "I'll chat to you" effectively leaves answers as a cliff hanger with people following a topic left up in the air as it will take the answers out of answerbank. I would really ask for caution in making this facility available.

We have already seen Answerbankers asking others to report question and answers even posting the link! This is wrong. We think AB messaging is a bad idea and will cause suspicion as discussions and outcome of questions will be decided in secret with certain Answerbankers asking for back up if things arent going their way. When, if this is launched, a group of us are ready to respond if it is seen to be used to as a tool to report legit questions and answers, by a small but troublesome group of Answerbankers

lol, give over!!!
Cretinz- this is AnswerBank not KGB, you seriously think anyone is going to do that? And if they are that 'pally' with their associates I would have thought they'd already be in contact via Messenger anyway.
I personally think a PM service will be a brilliant addition to the site, and I think it will stop alot of the chattier elements, especially in B&S.
flubber- I don't think it will cut a discussion dead, usually when someone types "I'll email you" or something similar it is usually because the discussion has gone off on a tangent and they don't wish to hijack a thread by just chatting in it.

Maybe I worded my comments wrongly? I have run a forum that has had a lot of members - one has posted a question that all the members have seen and read and obviously many would like to have known what the answer was.
Someone comes along and says "I'll email you" and immediately the answer is left up in the air to the many who were following the thread. That means someone will post the self same question themselves possibly simply to get an answer to what they have been excluded from ,and if its a world wide forum then nobody ever gets to personally know an answer because its been shared worldwide and answered privately on a one to one basis.
My post was simply a comment and not a critisism. If you see someone saying "I need help about X" and a member happens to know an answer and says they will post off forum then something you have read you can no longer follow because someone goes and says "I'll privately email you the answer" then you - as a voyeur - following a question that interests you - are not going to see an answer because its all gone off forum.
it was constructive critisism, maybe it is simply nosiness on my part - I don't know, but if I see a post here I do like to read all the questions and answers given here because I learn a lot by doing so. Again, if anyone posts on AB they are asking for help or answers from a world wide audience so who decides what answers should be given in private that the rest of the ABers are going to read but be be excluded from?
Anyone wanting as personal answer should not post on a public forum as I see it. No disrespect to any ABers at all.

Actually I agree with some points made above, there is a small collective clique who use msn to buddy up and get posts or posters banned (you know, the ones who believe they own and police the site). Whilst I also agree that pm may well assist in reducing the tedious drivel that plagues B&S, there are still those fame-grabbing attention-seekers that need to air their life stories in public on AB on a regular basis. Giving them a private room to chat to their buddies will reduce their exposure to AB fame, so they will soon plod back in a desperate attempt to 'fill us in' on the story so far. I am not against pm but I doubt I will use it - I don't want to get into any one-on-ones with any of you mentalists, especially in the dark allies of AB PM!!
Jjp - that was a really unhelpful answer probably based on your own viewpoint concerning instant messaging.
If netibiza wants to know about messaging and how to get it then a post on Internet and technology will bring helpful links.
There's msn IM and there's yahoo IM and tons of others but the first two are used a lot by people and individuals have a preference to what they find easiest. I prefer yahoo to msn and am more often on MIRC. It's what floats your boat but I would not dream to tell anyone that a certain IM is crap. They may not find it so.

Oh gosh no - I love octavius's replies..........I am just in deep sigh mode that my name seems to be the attacked from the clique for anything I say and wherever I post it and what I comment on.
Now take Octavius - sits on top of the fence and sees both sides of a topic/viewpoint and comments accordingly and in a very fair way...........
We need more of the octaviuses and less of the clique silly gits that only post to create trouble or get members to leave because they think they run AB. (await the clique to pounce on my comment!)
