I've just answered a question for jasperthomas and see that I have suddenly received a 3 star rating. What does this mean? I don't think I was being THAT helpful!

The author of the question gives the star rating. It shows how much we appreciate people's help.

Thanks - a 3 star rating for you then!
But it seems to be seen as impolite to award 1 or 2 stars. It's hardly ever done.

Yes that makes sense. The answer given is either right (3 stars) or wrong (0 stars). Can you have an answer half right?
You may reject the answer, but still be grateful for the effort. But in this event it would seem quite inappropriate to give stars.
I've seen one or two stars used if an answer has been given which may have been considered but not chosen. It's a 'thanks for the effort' rating.
I've noticed very few people award stars
