Beta Update
49 Answers
Hi,
Hope everyone's well and looking forward to Christmas!
Just a quick message to keep you up to date:
As you can see the Techies have now removed the link to the new beta version of AB from the homepage.
This doesn't mean it's gone forever...fear not!
Judging from everyone's feedback and by the numerous problems a large number of users were experiencing, we obviously still have some work to do. So, for the time being if anyone is still using the beta version and has any difficulties in doing so, please do not report it as we are well aware of the issues and I assure you the techies are working hard to fix it. At present we're unaware of how long the problems will take to fix but I will keep you posted.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to post in this thread.
Thanks,
AB Ed

I love the chat on here (well most of it!) and it is going to happen anyway, but I foresee problems now.

An element of cliquey-ness has and always will exist on AB, it is the nature of humans to form friendships and allegiances and share opinions, such sites as AB can rarely escape that. Nothing wrong with that. It might lead to a reduction in traffic/questions, but it would soon pick up again come Easter.
What I do not approve of though is the facebook/bebo-esque friend accumulator ethos as estolled by the ABs recent efforts. AB is not a popularity contest. If it were, Id probably win anyway of course, but it isnt and I personally dont aim to win friends and gain influence (my natural charm and charisma does). I just give old fashioned replies to sensible questions coupled with my acerbic wit and intelligence.
Another thing I firmly believe in is modesty, which I practice and check in the mirror every day.

That's sort of what I meant Octavius, though not put as well as your posting. I love the chat on here as much as anyone else, but I think the 'friendship' and cliqueyness issues would become worse when behind the scenes nastiness on PM creeps out onto the main site. Gang mentallity! It can be controlled better without PM and little plots.
I agree with you about modesty!

Back again - blimey, whats all that about Lofty?
What makes you think that PM's will cause problems spilling out onto the site in general? All the ones I've rec'd & sent are very nice & friendly. Yes we may share more personal issues on them, but certainly not about other AB'ers - that would be like going back to school.
