blatant promotion of other sites !!

Now youre back on form i hope we can return to the good old days where any links to other sites advertising them were removed.Lately the site has been on certain days swamped by talk of facebook,yoville and other social networking sites like myspace and bebo.I only hope you will continue your good work and stop users cluttering the site with nonsense about fruitmachines and imaginery tvs bought for imaginery houses in an imaginery town.As im sure you can imagine its all rather boring to those of us not there.And i just hope that folk who enjoy these places will continue to use them , but consider users here who dont and arent interested in loads of posts about something not relevant to ab and not allowed to be promoted under the site rules.

Correct me if im wrong, but this thread is about people talking about Facebook and Yoville, and the fact that talking about these sites could send AB users elsewhere, yeah?

Well, at the moment, while writing this reply, i can count at the very least seven links to other sites - the "ads by Google" bit on the right lists five straight away.
Im sure AB have a deal with Google and they can put up whatever ads they want - which will direct AB users to other sites.
Isnt this the same?

Also, isnt it the same as if someone posts a general question about something - a food item, a car, clothing, games, the list is endless?
Isnt mentioning, for instance, the new cream egg bar the same as mentioning Facebook?
Readers might get interested and go elsewhere to find out more about it.

It would be impossible to stop people talking about things by name - sorry, you can't mention Facebook, you cant mention the company Mars, you cant talk about Honda cars, you cant talk about anything with a name.
Where would the site be then?

I agree with mrBounty I will often, when answering a question put a link up to an item on sites like amazon, maplins or similar to demonstrate the item a poster may need to solve their problem...

Are we now saying that I can't do this and I will have to answer questions saying "yes you can get something that will do that for you... but you'll have to guess what it is"

There was several threads a little while ago about Asda's cheap sausages, am I also to assume that due to these threads everyone that read them will go to asda and meet up there to talk and stop using this site as well :)

There has been no advertisment of these sites. I have'nt seen one post that suggests "go toFB, Yoville because its better than here."
There are people who takl about it. I'm not interested in Yoville because its not my sort of thing. Tried it didn't get on with it. I use FB. Not just because there are friends of mine there but also my kids use it. This does not in any way lower the amount of time I spend here seeing Legend bleat about it.
Whats the matter. Is it the fact that there is a place out there in Internet wonder land that you can't control or monopolize.
A place where other memebers who have been picked on a generaly harassed by you that you cannot get at. And don't tell me you don't because you do. I've seen it. In one form or another it has always been you.
It's a fact of life that you cannot rule everything. You may well flood chatterbank with your posts but in the end thats all you can do.

well i didnt sign the agreement that said " you must remain true and faithful to the answerbank at ALL times, Never must you stray onto other sites that may take away precious moments spent on the answerbank" when i registered here 2 and a half years ago.

I really think this is a case of "well, im not part of that cause it doesnt interest me , so i dont want to hear anything about it" Well, that's just bad luck really.
