HELP!!! with sons Maths homework (sorry if in wrong catagory)

Hope somene can help! The question is.......

What mathmatical reasons are there as to why a chess board has 64 squares?

I was never good at maths in general a school lol, but this has gt me completely stummped! So thought I'd see if any Abers had any suggestions, guesses are also welcome lol

With all due respect to Jenna, her link doesn't actually answer the question posed (why 64 squares?)

I think you have to consider the number of possible moves. A smaller board would give fewer possibilities and that would lead to a trivial game that would not be challenging.

Likewise, a larger board would have so many possibilities and so much open space, that a conclusion (a checkmate) would be almost impossible to achieve.
I think its more to do with the number of chess pieces.

You got me....don't play chess but sons do and they're absent. Draught board has same number of pieces & board.
