Could be worms?
Question Author
even with scabs??a friend said her dog had a particularly nasty kind that caused lots of scabs by tail so maybe, thanks
Sounds as if the cat could have a flea allergy, that's not to say he has any fleas on him now, but if cats develop an allergy to fleas, it can take ages to clear up. It's a possibility especially as the worst affected part is near the base of the tail. Your vet will soon be able to confirm what it is, and give the cat something to clear it up. Hope all goes well.

thank you all for putting our minds at ease, poor smudgey has neva had a days illness before,so we were thinkin the worst thanx all
Let us know how you got on at the vet's.
Am curious to know what is exactly is now...
My friends cat had same thing with scabs, it was a bad reaction to the fleas.
Now she uses frontline every few months and she is fine.

If they run late with frontline or forget then she comes out with scabs within a week.

However took ages to realise-her vet was rubbish and never said it could be that till went to a new one.

The I would think the hunger is worms too.

thanks for all your answers, the vet felt it was an allergic reaction to fleas, and gave him advocate,it treats worms as well,he also had an anti inflammatory injection to ease the itching,if he still doesnt put on weight he is to go back for blood tests,so we are keepin our fingers crossed total cost was 55.97,but hes worth it :-)
glad its not to bad hopefully but if he does not put the weight back on it could be thyroid problems or diabetis i have had cats with both and both were treatable so dont panic ruthxxx
Thanks for letting us know. Hope he feels better soon :-)
