Should the Taliban be protected under the Geneva Convention?

Once again it is only the British who stick to the rules, even when there is no need to. I wonder how many Talibans are shipped to the UK for treatment, if their wounds are to severe to be treated in a field hospital?

The duty to provide medical care to prisoners of war is set out in Article 30 of the Geneva Convention.

However the Taliban is not a signatory to the Geneva Convention and does not respect its rules.

As a result British combat medics and even military chaplains serving in Afghanistan have stopped wearing the Red Cross arm band, which is supposed to grant some protection on the battlefield, because they fear that if anything it will make them more of a target for the enemy.

Since the Taliban do not fight in uniform, when captured they should be put against a wall and shot. A much swifter death than they would give out to our soldiers.

The army has also flown in an imam from a London mosque to see to their religious needs.
It's PC gone mad!!
War is war. There is no real law. If someone is rtying to kill you you dont think of any convention, particularly oin the heat of the moment.

But of course the Islington coffe brigade sit in their comfy armchairs with no clue tying our soldiers arms behind their backs.

If only the blinkered idiots (many of whom are on this site) would leave well alone then war would probably be much shorter. Ironically it is the liberal lefties who prolong war and cause more damage. Perhaps they too shoudl be put against the wall and shot.
Are you confusing Al Qaeda and the Taliban?

The Taliban were actually in control of Afghanistan and running the country (however badly you we think) before we invaded it.

Now you want to execute them because they're not fighting in uniforms and playing by the rules of an occupying force?

I will elaborate a bit more on what Jake said. Americas biggest mistake was that they could not differentiate between Alqaeeda and Taliban. Alqaeeda were and are mainly outsiders who went to Afghanistan to fight against Russia with the help of USA and of course Britain. After that they became USAs enemies and this story is very long.

Taliban are the same people again who fought as Heroes and were supported by the West against Russia, only difference is they are not outsiders but Afghans and of those areas of Pakistan that are tribal areas and had never been considered two separate areas. There was never a functional border even during the invasion of Russia. They are fighting against invading forces and they are fighting for two reasons.

1 Their country has been invaded, only difference is the invaders this time are not Russians.

2 They are extremely hospitable people and are fighting to save the people who they had given refuge there. Only thing they were asking before they could have taken action Osama Bin Laden & co, a proof that they were involved in 9/11. As USA never had proofs and knew all along what was the game all about so they showed proof to Tony Blair and Parvez Musharraf . They never bothered showing that to Taliban who at that time were legitimately in the govt. Any way long stories and controversies.

I have always said and would say again, Taliban would become Heroes for the USA once again as slowly but surely USA = Israel are getting close to the all time real target, Pakistans nuclear capabilities. And they always have a helping hand available from within Pakistan, sometime as Musharaf and sometime as Zardari and many more queuing to serve better.

Finally, as they do not wear uniform, so anyone who gets killed, can be a Taliban, Dead people do not speak.

Er yes,

These "heroes" also throw acid on women and girls going to school

Afghanistan does NOT need their return but that doesn't mean we disregard the Geneva convention

Can anyone believe we have people on this site like keyplus90 who seriously think that the Taliban are extremely hospitable people and are fighting to save the people who they had given refuge there.

It is frightening to know that there are people amongst us with these feelings for these savages.

He cannot be female or a homosexual.
I find a number of attitudes on here frightening
As far as I am concerned, once a combatant (hard to define) is wounded and captured, then humanity takes over, they have become a captive and wounded human being to be taken care of in the same way as our own.

The same rule should not apply to the battlefield, where I support every ruse, every dirty trick in the book, to rid the planet of extremists, especially Islamic fanatics.
See what I mean?

So Gormless does that mean that you'd support the use of Chemical, nuclear and biological weapons in Afghanistan?

Or do they not come under ruses and dirty tricks?
No JTP, not biological or chemical, ever, nuclear only as a very very very last resort to save the World.

I was rather more thinking of more day-to-day tactical jollies by a supremely highly trained army, the British Army, to keep the ragheads at bay.
of course they should! as jake has pointed out. when it comes to questions of this nature keyplus90 seems to have far better grasp on things than yourself. you've taken an occupied country the size of afghanistan, with all it's different fighting factions resisting occupation for their own reasons and ambitions and you've labelled them all ' savages' how ' stiff upper lip ol chappy' of you. when you walk into any conveniance store, the reading material that you can readily put your hands on is the last thing you should be reading. cheers! a brief summary of the taliban http://www.alternet.org/audits/110447/who_are_ the_taliban_the_afghan_war_deciphered/
Yes they should, and we should treat them when they're captured and injured.
Because we're better than them.
Eye for an eye?

We should gather the opium crop, inject it into the Taliban aggressors, give them a daily fix, then clear out of their diseased country. They would be to worried how they would get their next fix to bother us further. And the addicts in Britain may get some satisfaction.

maxximus

you've taken an occupied country

What's with this YOU'VE ?

Do you not class yourself as British?

We will never get full integration, while those who we welcomed into our country or born in this country even, class themselves as not British.

If you are not happy about us 'occupying' their country, why don't you get over there, and help the Taliban to drive us out maybe?
