fax problem

I have a Packard Bell Diamond Plus scanner with fax facility.I can scan documents to my computer and e-mail them.But when I use the scan/fax facility, I get the telephone key pad image OK, enter number, dial,get a initializing message but nothing happens.
I have removed and reinstalled the program,but it has not cured the problem.

it uses your computers modem for fax, so you need to make sure you:

a) have a modem in your computer
b) it is setup and working correctly
c) it is connected to a phone line.

Not having much idea what to look for,I have done a search in "System Info".found" modem" clicked on it and its listed amongst other things "standard 1200bps modem"
Is there any thing to look for to see if its connected.
