Can we put a stop to people answering questions with just a link to another website?

Firstly its lazy.

Secondly, I thought by the name of this site that it is a repository of questions and answers. If the answers are only available as links to other sites then what happens if 6 months down the line, those sites become defunct? You then have a question without an answer.

I understand that sometimes an answer may be complex and then a link for further info is useful, but I would like to see the "nutshell" of the answer actually on the site in the first instance.

On a number of occasions I have delved into Answerbanks past to look at an older question to find a dead link.

Just a thought

I can see absolutely no problem with posting just a link. I frequently do just that. Clearly, it provides an answer at the time, which is obviously when the question is set and - as far as I'm concerned, anyway - I provide the answer for that questioner.

If someone else comes upon the page some months later and the link is no longer functional, what on earth is difficult about setting the same question again if you desparately want an answer? The same questions are constantly reappearing on AnswerBank...and why not? There's nothing wrong with someone different asking a previously-asked question. The only annoying repeat questions are those of which you sometimes find three on the same page!

This is a storm in a teacup. Let people answer in their own way...simple as that.

Hmm, must be me then. I do this a lot - that is, post just a link. Reason? I sometimes spend a fair bit of time looking for a link and just don't have any time left to do more than post the link. It's effective and works. Usually the links are self-explanatory and any text I could add would be superfluous. All of the people who have posted here spend a lot of their free time finding answers for people and I think that's why they feel the criticism is uncalled for. Some of us may have had our differences in the past, but one thing is certain - you won't find such a wealth of knowledge given in such a spirit of generosity on many other sites. One word or a hundred words - it doesn't matter if it answers the question, does it?
I couldn't agree more, Quizmonster. I can never understand why some users get so worked up over the repeating questions, far less give rude answers to them. Now that the new navigation is in place it's fairly easy to keep track of the recent questions, although I do concede that it was annoying in the old days when questions were lost.

Mr.Ix - You only have to look at the heading of your question to see that you started off on the wrong footing.

Which I have apologised/retracted 3 times already, but thanks for bringing it up again.

I was being polite & helpful

err except you didn't and still havent addressed my actual point/question

until you began shouting at us

Sorry? Where was I shouting?

& I'm not responding any further.

There is really no need to be like this

We tried to be helpful, but it fell on deaf ears.

No it didn't I was just trying to say that nobody addressed/took my point

As I said earlier - 'Have a nice day'.

Fair enough everyone I concede the point.

I misunderstood the name of this website obviously.

To me Answerbank implied that the answers would be stored as some kind of repository that future users could use as a reference.

I come from a website that actively pursues and weeds out duplicates and maybe that has spilled over into my thinking on this one

I shall bow out gracefully and apologise for any offence that I may have caused

And for what its worth, I think you all do a great job.

kind regards

I am a guilty just a link poster. Someone asked "where can I buy..." and I posted the link. So shoot me

BANG!

Just logged on after a time gap, Bernardo, LMAO

Merry Christmas

I was just going to post a link but then again I might have left myself open to abuse.....................

I'm the yawning man, the yawning man
I yawn, I yawn, I yawn
With my yawning song I yawn along
And I sing my yawning song

And I snuggle in quite warm, I won't come to any harm
And I sing my yawning song
And I go to bed and I cover up my head
And I sing my yawning song

And my nightie it is blue and Teddy he comes too
And I sing my yawning song
And my jammies they are red and I get myself to bed
And I sing my yawning song

And I cover up my head and my prayers they re all said
And I sing my yawning song
Goodnight, goodnight, don't let the wee bugs bite
And I sing my yawning song

So goodnight and sweet repose, lie on your back don't squash your nose
And I sing my yawning song

Enough said????

I was never abusive to anyone. Please could everyone stop insinuating that I was.
well you did insinuate that some of us were lazy!! But it is Chrisatmas, season of peace and goodwill, so I forgive you, hope you get a new lightweight door in your stocking
Question Author

I was expressing an opinion which I subsequently retracted. I know I am being pedantic but that is not abuse. Smudge said I was shouting at her when I wasn't too.

Merry Xmas everyone, and woofgang - What does the lightweight door reference mean?

(Post a link if you want  lol ;))

aren't you Mr Ixolite the shy banshee out of Terry Pratchett who hid behind doors, then discovered new mobility when someone took a door off its hinges for him??? He was also too shy to wail so used to write notes saying "OOOOEEEEEOOOO and push them under peoples' bedroom doors
Question Author

Ah yes.

Indeed I am. But i think you'll find it was Schleppel the Shy Bogeyman who actually carried a door around with him lol. But now I'm on your wavelength ;) Have a good Xmas
