A Blocking Facility

Hi Ed, would it be possible to create a blocking facility on here? many forums already operate a "block user" option, surely this would cut down on the general fisticuffs and may even be beneficial in cutting down the trolls as if people blocked them their "fun" would be more limited.

you could just block users you didnt like, hard to see how that could get abused, if you like your fisticuffs you just dont use the blocking facility :)

The people that would use this would be the people who don't get too involved with the rubbish in the first place. Others seem to like it no matter how ridiculous it makes them look.

Some people don't like being disagreed with...this could be a problem in some category's.

When you say a blocking facility, do you mean the ability to prevent certain people from posting on your threads?

no I mean a blocking facility that just blocks users of your choice, they could still reply on your thread but you would not see it.

But then someone could say something accusatory and because you've not replied, it may be taken as correct by others.

the person slinging mud would be highlighting themselves to get reported, its when everyone argues at each is when the water muddys and the ed just ignores it

Blocking doesn't work. It's too confusing for people to talk around. People would just chat about who is blocked and who isn't.
Only way is a system that checks IP .. and that's about impossible, as they are dynamic .. or most of them are.

No moderators to see the whole picture at any time .. That is probably the main issue.

regular moderation is the key, however the stuff going on now at chatterbank is more bickering rather than serious bannable stuff.

I have rarely seen anything truly malicious, particularly racist or really insulting.
We all get wound up occasionally .. Be a crap, uninteresting sort of life if we didn't.

Simply don't go to CB, it's cliquey anyway (or a certain person is posting about some triviality in their life, which then generates about 185 replies).

As it has been pointed out, it wouldn't work particularly well for the social elements of the site - it is the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "LALALALA". And I don't think anyone is up for that.

When things get a little heated we (usually the weekend ed) will suspend a user for a cooling off period. Most will be reinstated (unless you send us snooty emails!) after a few days.

I think, for now, this is the best we've got to offer!
