good evening,

im not too sure how to explain this, and i might not even make much sense in what im asking - no change there then eh!
so apologies ok! lol

anyway, my problem is this -
i am not able to send an email to a contact via live windows messenger (?)
the email doesnt send, and this message appears :-

The host '****@aol.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly.
Subject 'Logitech(R) Mail', Account: '****@aol.com', Server: '****@aol.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11003, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

(there is nothing to click on in this message box to verify or do anything)

im not sure what this means, or what i need to do to sort this out.

can anyone offer any suggestions please?

thank you :o)

(ive *starred* out the email address that i use on aol)

"The host '****@aol.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly."

You've starred out a bit you didn't need to there (though understand why, and well done for being careful)

Anyhow, the server name should be smtp.aol.com (so the @ sign should be a . )

im sorry i dont know what you mean chuck, and still dont know what to do.

(i starred it out because thats my actual email address that i use on aol)
OK (gawd I hate windows live email!)

I have not got windows live mail here, and I don't use it at all, so this is the best I can do from memory!

you basically need to modify you account details so the server name is smtp.aol.com, not [email protected]

So, click on the tools menu > accounts then when you get a list of your mail accounts click once to highlight the correct one (probably the only one) and click the properties button... once the properties have opened then find the outgoing server (SMTP) name and change it to remove the @ sign from the name and replace it with a . click OK a few times and try again.

righty oh chuck, will do!

thanks very much ;o)
Just one point..... (you really sounded like you still didn't understand a word I said BTW :))

You are using a AOL connection at the moment? (i.e. AOL is your ISP and you are at home)
Question Author
lol ..... ;o/

yes, thats right, im using aol and yeah im at home
LOL... it should just be the server name is wrong then...

If nobody can come and post more precise directions I'll look back tomorrow when I can check it and post better instructions.

lol ..... :o/

thanks chuck, thatd be great, ta very much!

i think the bit where ive made an error, is on the 'set up email servers' page
it already says pop3 for the server type
and im not sure what to put in the incoming (pop3/imap) and out going (smtp) areas.

so if/when i hear from you tomorrow, and youre able to advise me, i could remove the details/address i attempted to put in before, which is causing the email error,
and start a fresh with the correct details eh?

thanks alot for your time tonight chuck, much appreciated :o)
"i think the bit where ive made an error, is on the 'set up email servers' page"

Yep, it is...

it's the outgoing (SMTP) that the errror is reporting, as said above there should not be an @ sign in that address, it's smtp.aol.com

and the incoming server should be set as IMAP for it's type and the name is then imap.aol.com.

Further details are here for outlook express, windows live mail should be very similar...

thank you chuck,
ok, ive typed in what youve told me in the incoming and outgoing areas, and i seem to have got a bit further along the line now! .. whu hoo!!
and now a box - 'log on to imap.aol.com' asking me to verify my username and password, which i type in, but it keeps reappearing each time, asking me again..
AOL ...bleuyuuch !

want a sandwich ap? from my new tupperware box?
chocolate spread or sausage?
both very nice and freshly made too... ;o)
Yeeaaggghhh ! (runs away screaming in a big speeded-up 'Benny Hill style' zig-zag)
I've heard AP only keep walnut whips in his tupperware boxes!

OK I'm off to bed, we are getting there with the mail though, now it just need the correct ports set because AOL doesn't do anything the standard way!

I'll look back here tomorrow
Question Author
hey, walnut whips?! now we are talking! lol ...

ok chuck, and thank youuuuuu! :o)
With an AOL related problem CF ? ..tomorrow, the next day etc etc ;-)
Is this the first time ever you've emailed this person? Have you had no problem before?
I ask because in the past this has happened to me. I think its telling you it can't deliver because your friends 'Inbox' is FULL so ignore it and try tomorrow. Sometimes people put a block on while they're away and you will get this message to stop you sending any more. For peace of mind phone her and ask about it.

and i come chasing after you AP in a speeded up benny hill style zig zag way, with out stretched arms, holding my open tupperware for you!!
Question Author
hi jem,
no its a problem with the set up - in a nutshell i didnt know what i was doing, and i fluffed it up!!
but, i think we are getting there, if chuck dares to come back lol ...
..then it turns into one of those horrible nightmares where no matter how fast I run, you're always a few yards behind, then I come to a huge flight of stairs going down and I glide down them in slow motion and bump into a white rabbit going "where's the spoons, where's the spoons?!" then a huge snake swims through a doughnut, and I land on a massive couch - then Sigmund Freud leans over and says "tell me about your childhood".
