Not much of a reader bednobs but for me it's a toss up between Far from the Madding Crowd, Tess of the D'Urbervilles or Mayor of Casterbridge.
Wuthering Heights not far behind.
Herman Hesse's Glass Bead Game

If you want others I can provide but in terms of No2, I would nominate Shokalov's The Don Trilogy (The Don comes home to the Sea), a history of the White Russians at the time of the Commmunists.
Most recently 'Perfume' by Patrick Suskind
Catcher in the Rye
I have another trilogy for No 3 - Isaac Asimov's The Foundation
Non fiction that reads like the best fiction.
"The King's War" by C.V.Wedgewood
and for light relief, any Tom Sharpe - though I have my favorites

and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Best historical, Kissinger's Diplomacy and McCullough's bio on John Adams.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy (although liked the first book best)
"A Prayer for Owen Meaney" - John Irving

dt, that's 11 (15 if you count all those in HH guide series) now. What don't you understand about the word "best" :) :)
As a child, it was The Weirdstone of Brisingamen

Will get back to you on the best book I've ever read before I pop my clogs :)
(Hopefully)
'Child 44' by Tim Rob Smith.
Stumbled on "1984" by George Orwell on my second visit to the senior library at 12.
Knocked me for 6!
Until I Find You by John Irving
To borrow the ex Duchess of Pork's famous superlative, bednobs, you did not mention the superlative, "bestest" - so to borrow the expression that includes the "of a short pier," I rest my case,

And in my first message I made it clear:

"Herman Hesse's Glass Bead Game

If you want others"

Specsavers do a good range at cheap prices and there is always your magnification function on the pc

Where the rivers meet by John Wain
In the place of fallen leaves by Tim Pears
and too many autobiographies to mention
