If you "respond" to a friend request on Facebook, is that the same as accepting the request, or can you ask the person something like "who are you" or "why do you want to friend me", etc. first? I don't want to click on "respond" and let this person be my friend, since I'm not sure I know them. (I could know her, she may have gotten married, but I don't recognise the surname).

Goodness sake! .. You can't go on like this!
Yes, you can. I think it says 'accept' and 'respond'

What do you mean Albags?
I just say something like, 'sorry, haven't any idea who you are as I am rubbish with names'. The person then says who they are (where they used to live, etc) and then I (usually) know who they are.

Well I've just discovered, actually, no one on here was correct. When you click on "Respond", you only have two choices, "Accept" or "Report/Block". So in the end I chose to "Accept", but then put the woman on "Restricted" (Which for anyone who doesn't know, like I didn't until today, click on the "Friends" tab on the person's page, and then click on "Restricted". They can then only see what you have allowed to be publicly seen.)
Sorry, but that's a bit of a crappy attitude. It wasn't wrong, I just told you what I do.

You can send messages without being their friend.

Sorry sherrardk, didn't mean to sound like I had a crappy attitude! But I think Facebook is a bit tricky for a lot of people, and a lot of people probably don't know about all the hidden bits is has!
