Hedging suggestions?

I live near the west coast and the garden is very exposed to cold winds. I want to plant the boundary with evergreen shrubs that will grow to no more than 1.5m, to provide some shelter but not block the sea views. I would prefer not very dark green foliage and berries for the birds would be good. I need to plant a boundary of about 100m so some variety would be welcome.
Any good suggestions?

Seaside fuchsia, lovely flowers, autumn colour and fruit fr the birds. Google fuchsia riccartoni.

A few ideas of hedging that thrives in exposed sites include;

•Griselinia Littoralis, which is also known as New Zealand Privet likes the odd gale. Its broad, fleshy leaves make it one of the best windbreaks going.
•Elaeagnus x Ebbingei is a fast growing evergreen that loves coastal spots.
•Escallonia forms nice dense hedging and are frankly superb in very exposed situations.
•Hawthorn is a surviver or blackthorn if the soil is very heavy.
•Hebe can be very hardy hedging.
•Olearia Haastii or Daisy Bush.
•Wild Rose Red (Rosa Rugosa Rubra) is a upright, fast growing deciduous rose hedge that flowers for most of the summer.

I've tried the rhs plant selector but when I enter the criteria it says it has no suggestions!
I have the fuchsia on the other boundary and it's ok but it loses it's leaves in winter which is when I really need the protection from the winds; and it does tend to grow rather too tall needing cutting back to keep it under control.
I really need something that only needs trimming once a year at most as it costs quite a bit to get it done.

mixed hedge of escalonia, griselina and possibly the fuschia... if you can do a bit of trimming on a bit of it yourself I'd add in a sea buckthorn or two for the wonderful berries the birds like them but I had some buckthorn and orange ice cream in Beaumaris it was to die for
