Is it necessary to read The Kite Runner before reading A Thousand splendid suns? I was buying the latter from a Charity shop when another customer assured me that it was best to read the Kite Runner before I read that one.

Not necessary at all. Two totally unrelated stories. I preferred 1000 splendid suns but both are good.
No.. both equally good .
But.. A Thousand Spendid Suns wasn't just good it was brilliant .
One of the very books I've cried over .
Get the tissues ready :)

Two completely different stories. I too preferred 1000 splendid suns, one of the best books I ever read.

I hope you enjoy it .It's a wonderful book .

Shaneystar2. Read Star of the Sea - you will not be disappointed. In fact I think you will write a thread after you have read it!
Just looked it up and it looks like the sort of book I would enjoy so will order it from the library .
My usual genre is crime fiction but I do like to get away from that from time to time and read other things so this looks good .
Thanks for the recommendation Stargazer ....happy reading :)
Both books are good Star, but A thousand Splendid Suns has the edge - such a damn fine book and will definitely bring on the tears.

Probably told to read The Kite Runner first, so you can save the best for last !
