Tried a couple of times to read Lord of the Rings - Got too bored in the middle of the second book each time

And Life of Pi - just seemed too silly for too long

As a I get older more and more. Recently "How to teach quantum physics to your dog". But the one that sticks in my mind from years back, "Ulysses" which I only got a third of the way through.

I must admit a friend gave me the Life of Pi a few years back, and the Lovely Bones, and I couldn't get started so gave them away. If I can't get a good feel from a book with a quick dip in, it's lost to me. Same as if the heroine's got a daft name like Tulip, annoys me no end.

I've just finished reading The Turin Shroud - a good if gruesome murder tale with a twist - which goes against one of my other dislikes, a book written in the present tense. That was good, though. I don't like books in the first person singular, either.

Chris Patten's last one, "What Next? Surviving the Twenty-First Century" - very heavy going. I enjoyed his books on his time as Hong Kong Governor and "Not Quite the Diplomat," so this one was very heavy going.

Finnegans Wake, The Cloud Atlas, satires like Bored of the Things which take off currently bestselling books or series and plenty of others, some bought as presents by friends and family who really don't have a clue what makes a book that I am likely to enjoy

Book Recommendations Wanted, Please.
My wife, a retired schoolteacher, belongs to a book club which meets monthly but all the books chosen by the founder, a lady aged 92, are sombre and heavy going, for example, "Sarah's Key".
My wife is unable to visit a library as she is disabled, but friends could collect books for her. She also has a Kindle, e-reader.
The titles of any books which you have enjoyed and found to be real page turners would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

a number which i will get around to finishing, Parade's end, Lord of the Rings, though have read it over and over, Gullivers Travels, not actually enjoying that for some reason.

I must admit it took me a full year to read Lord of the Rings. I have several books on the go at once, but with that one I had to keep going back to remind myself who was who. I was determined to finish it though, and once I had I quite missed it! I think it had become a bit of a challenge! :o)

Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel. I know it's generally thought to be a great book but I douldn't get to grips with it. half of the time I had no idea who was speaking. The fault probably lies with me. I've tried twice but gave up bothe times.
