does anyone know this book?

Can anyone help - read this book when I was younger and can't remember what it is called.
I think the main character was called Hugo but not entirely sure on that. What I do remember was there was lots of sex in the book, it was a bit weird, and the main character has a wife and a baby but at the end his wife becomes a lesbian and he gets tarred and feathered!!! If anybody knows what this book is I would love to know as its really bugging me!
