"Battery low or no power

This means you need to replace the batteries to continue using the card reader.

To replace the batteries in your card reader:

Get 2 CR2032 batteries.

Find the back of the card reader.

Push the tip of a pen into the small, rectangular hole near the bottom.

Pull out the battery drawer.

Remove the old batteries.

Add the new batteries in the + and - positions.

Push the drawer back into the card reader.

If you don’t have the right batteries, you can order a new card reader." (emphasis added)

If yours is as old as mine was you can take it to any branch and they'll swap it for a new one. New ones have the slide-out drawer as described by TCL, old ones have the back held on by screws so you can't easily relplace the batteries. Again, the old ones only worked with one card, so my wife and I had one each for the same account; the new ones operate slightly differently and you only need one machine for all cards.

Thank you both very much.  I've ordered new batteries from Amazon as I am not able to get to a NW branch.

May be a bit late now, but you can order a new card reader online and have it posted out

Many cards work in other machines.  For instance my Barclays works in the NW reader and visa versa.

I have one with a drawer so its esaasy enough to change.

I'm not surprised, over the last few years they closed my nearest (walking distance), then the next nearest (bus journey) so now I have to use what was the third nearest (bus and train journey).   I can see that one day they'll have branches in London, Birmingham and Edinburgh and that's your lot.

Sugar chelle.  I've paid for new batteries.  I could say at least I'll know what to do if it happens again but I know I won't remember.

I don't have any other cards YMF unfortunately.

Have to give BA to TCL.

Canary I am disabled that's why I can't get to NW or anywhere else unless pushed in a wheelchair.

^lb...hope you have the newer-style one with the slide-out drawer. The older one has four very tiny cross-head screws to remove (and replace) the whole back. Very awkward!

Correction...don't worry -just looked. There is a slide-out drawer on all of them. Just make sure the two batteries go in the right way!
