Defamiliarization

Anyone got any good examples of this technique of forcing the reader to see common things in a starnge way, thus enhancing literary effect? e.g. Ulysses.

not sure if this counts, but the books by Jostein Gaarder (Sophie's World or The Solitaire Mystery) are great for getting you to look at the world you live in in a different way. It uses philosophy (but very basic concepts) in a really interesting way.
