Does anyone know the name of a novel set in Shanghai around the early 1900's. The novel includes a description of a mansion on a hill overlooking the sea--the woman has a lover and maybe two sons?

I cannot recall what this book is. Could it be Maugham? It is NOT the chapter from Joy Luck Club which seems like what I describe.

Is it perhaps Ishiguro's When We Were Orphans?

I did go through an Ishiguro stage when I recollect reading this book. The summary does not sound like what I recall and my local library does not have the book--I would have ordered it through them. I will try to get it and see. Thanks

Gravitate, that "answer" was just an excuse to let everyone know you were going to Shanghai. But thanks.
