Can anyone recommend a good book about greek gods, myths and legends etc - I seem to remember reading one as a child but can't remember anything about it other than that the trojan horse story was in it

Roger Llancelyn Green did an excellent series of books on various mythologies including Tales Of Greek Heroes and The Tale Of Troy.
Recently David Gemmell published 2 books in a trilogy about Troy.Sadly he died last year and I don't know if the final volume had been written. But the first 2 are very good and stand alone quite well. They are a slightly different take on the story.
Actually there have been a few authors of late who have turned to Troy.Wonder what it is about Troy that keeps the story of such interest.

The Renault books are fantastic, but she studied the Classics at Oxbridge and assumes quite a bredth of background knowledge about the Greeks, so not the best place to start (plus they were mainly about Alexander the Great, rather than the myths and legends). I'd suggest you find a layman's edition of The Iliad and The Odyssey, there's nothing like reading the original stories of Troy.
