I did read some DeSade and yes, it's pretty graphic and disturbing especially if you believe it is all accurate, but somehow it didn't haunt me or anything.

but it really was The story of O which has disturbed me more than any other book. I don't know why I should react so extremely but I felt that my mind had been polluted. It is a dreadful,tragic story of abuse. In fact, I read it again at a five-year interval to reassess, felt even worse and destroyed the book ! Sorry about that

Tess of the D'Urbervilles upset me too, although obviously the gory details aren't in that one!!
